About the subject
The course extends the understanding of the effects and limitations of ICT and of the new opportunities it provides within organisations and society. It stimulates an awareness of the role of ICT in the management, processing and output of information and the effects it has on our daily lives. Computer programming is not included in this course. This is a broadly based course open to all students of whatever discipline. Some of the software covered includes spreadsheets, databases, project planning, presentation and web development. No previous ICT qualification is needed but good ICT skills are necessary. Students may need to spend extra time developing their software skills, some of this will need to be done in private study time.
Students will hear talks from visiting speakers, attend outside conferences and where possible visit local companies.
Approximately half the lesson time is spent improving ICT skills and developing coursework. First year projects are based on either a Spreadsheet task or a Web based task. In the second year all students improve their database skills and then identify and research a realistic problem for a real end-user and develop an information system, utilising a relational database package.

Learning Styles
Since the use of IT is changing all the time, students are expected to keep abreast of current developments by reading the newspaper supplements, magazines and watching TV programmes.
Lessons comprise of a mixture of group activities, role plays, traditional theory and regular homework's. Videos are also used to illustrate areas of the course.
Homework should take up to 5 hours per week, and will involve practical work.

Subject combinations and progression
The subject is a good combination with nearly all other A Level courses and a good foundation for most careers. There are many ICT combination degree courses, Business and IT, Media, Music, Geographical Information Systems, etc, for which this subject is useful.
