This new course offers a more flexible drop in way to learn about interior design in a series of themed workshop sessions taught by different specialist tutors. You can book the whole course or pick and choose individual sessions – it’s your choice.
In each session you will be set short projects to encourage you to explore and develop key skills in different aspects of designing interior spaces and will involve some theory, hands-on practice and your imagination. These skills include surveying, drawing a plan to scale, using the magic of colour to enhance a space, computer aided design, lighting design and an introduction to portfolio building in InDesign or PowerPoint.
The class size is capped to enable more space for individual one to one teaching than you would expect in a busy class.

About this course

Have a basic understanding of a variety of interior design concepts and skills including some simple techniques of Computer aided design (CAD); using small set projects which will inform your future art or design practice.

Basic materials are all included. We recommend that you bring your own sketchpad or sketchbook. For Computer based projects, weeks 6-10 we recommend that you bring your own USB memory stick.

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged. There are small set projects each week. 1:1 support and tutor guidance is available for all. There will be no homework.

Course programme

- Week1: Drawing a room plan, including: surveying a simple space and drawing to scale
- Weeks2-3: use of colour in interior design including: colour and space, texture and textiles.
- Weeks 4-5: Furniture and modern materials including: responsible sourcing for soft furnishing
- Weeks 6-7: Computer aided design such as SketchUp and Vectorworks;
- Week 8: Designing a hub
- Week 9: Lighting for interiors
- Week 10: Portfolio builder InDesign or PowerPoint portfolio from ready templates.

Additional information

You can further develop your skills and interest in Interior design through a range of courses at the City Lit. The following courses are ideal for you if you’d like to develop your Interior Design skills for work or to gain a place on a higher level course: The VF476 City Lit interior design course. This course runs for 20 Wednesdays, daytime 10- 5pm and runs over 2 terms or the VF500 City Lit interior design course which runs for 33 Thursday evening sessions from 6-9 pm, over three terms.
