Interior Design - MA

We use the historic city of Edinburgh as focus for our projects. Each year a different building within the city is used as a test bed for ideas. Projects are progressed in the studio environment, allowing for research and regular presentation of development work to peers and staff, which encourages discussion and, importantly, self-reflection.

Covering the study and design of interior space in relation to a wide range of public and private environments, this programme will guide you through your own innovative design project that finds new uses for old or redundant spaces in the city. Projects require you to work both in groups, for site research, and individually, on your design. There is also an element of exhibition to the programme, whereby in the third semester students are responsible for the design and construction of the ECA Interiors show at Free Range Exhibition in London. This provides an excellent opportunity for students to be involved in a live project, and show case their projects in progress.

You’ll be encouraged to focus on the aspects of interior design that you find interesting or personally relevant, and take charge of the direction of your coursework. Collaborations with other design subjects such as Fashion, Textiles, Graphic Design, Product Design and Architecture are encouraged, formally or informally.

Visits from industry practitioners, along with our strong links with commercial design consultancies and architectural practices, are invaluable in providing opportunities for expert advice and critical appraisal.

For assessment, MA students produce a body of practical and written work on an agreed, self-initiated topic.
