About this course

The course aims to:

reinforce, develop, supplement and hone your skills in etching
explore painterly, autographic, and photographic techniques of plate making
develop technical competence and a creative approach to etching techniques and materials
engender a critical awareness of your own work and that of peers
improve your awareness of relevant health and safety considerations and good working practice

This course is suitable for those who have already attended the Introduction to Etching short course or who already have intermediate printmaking knowledge.

Course programme

Course content:

  • historical survey of prints and strategies towards practice
  • exploring and combining negative and positive ways of image making both photographically and graphically by hand
  • painterly and autographic mark-making methods and techniques in plate making such as sugar lift and carborundum
  • photographic methods and techniques in plate making including photo image transfer and photo etching, colour separations and making positives both digitally and by hand
  • preparing (photosensitising) the plate, exposing positives to the plate, developing the photographic image to the plate and etching and printing the plate(s)
  • editioning and archiving prints

By the end of the course, you will:

  • have extended, explored and refined your technical ability, skills and creative thinking in etching and in your consideration of imagery and ideas
  • accomplish a critical awareness of your own practice
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of all relevant health and safety considerations
