About this course

You’ll learn useful skills such as academic writing, work in diverse teams and learn to utilise a wide variety of data sources. In doing so, you’ll fully prepare yourself for undergraduate study.

The course is suitable if you don’t meet the entry requirements for our BSc (Hons) International Hotel Management course, or you want extra preparation before starting degree-level study. You share the first year with other Sheffield Business School foundation year students, then move on to the degree.

This must include at least 32 points from one A level or equivalent BTEC National qualifications excluding general studies For example:
• CC at A Level
• MPP in BTEC Extended Diploma.
• A combination of qualifications, which may include AS levels and EPQ.

Course summary

Develop your cultural awareness by studying a language or spending a semester abroad through the ERASMUS exchange or our Learning in the Workplace initiative.Our flexible, responsive programme is designed for you in collaboration with our industry partners to meet the need for forward-thinking, innovative hospitality graduates who can strategically manage complex hotel operations.

You are taught by lecturers with a rich industry background – having held management positions in chain and independent hotels in the UK and abroad – who infuse teaching with research, industry expertise and passion for the hotel industry.

You will be provided with a challenging and supportive learning environment where you will experience 'hands-on' practical learning combined with a traditional classroom environment.

Your future employability is at the heart of everything we do and the course includes an optional placement year. Through our relationships with local, national and international employers we can help you to secure a great placement year and support you while you are there. Recent placements have taken place at Holiday Inn in Sheffield, JW Marriott in London, Disney World Resort in Florida, and Hilton Worldwide in Shanghai.Alternatively you can pursue an accelerated degree by participating in our Learning in the Workplace programme where you combine your studies with a semester spent working overseas. These opportunities will help you to build an eye-catching CV to impress future employers.Live projectsYour final year requires you to consult directly with a hotel business to resolve a real-life business issue. There is also a focus on business development, with students planning and pitching a hospitality venture to industry collaborators. This course also incorporates computer simulation to assist students in understanding how to develop and manage a hotel property.

Industry interaction comes formally through visiting speakers and informally through our association with the Institute of Hospitality, our strong alumni network and the activities of our hospitality society.
