This module will introduce students to the history of comics and encourage them to foster an understanding of comics texts through critical analysis and creative work; and to introduce the skills required to undertake an undergraduate degree of which comics is a component.

Course programme
The module combines a critical history of the comics medium with practical exercises and assignments. There will be 5 x 3 hour workshops on Saturday mornings. The workshops will be broken up with lecture/seminar and creative workshop, with each session ending with a reflection on the creative work with feedback from the tutors and peers. For the creative element, students may concentrate on a particular aspect of comics e.g. writing or art, and there will be an opportunity for collaboration. The indicative module content is as follows:
Week 1: Introduction – Comics, Comix & Graphic Novels
Week 2: Genre, Character, Story
Week 3: Autobiography & Truth Games
Week 4: International Comics Cultures
Week 5: Showcase: Exhibition and Performance event
TeachingThere will be 5 x three-hour lectures/seminar/workshops fortnightly for this module. All modules are supported by VLEs and staff office hours for individual consultation. Consultation via email or phone is also offered.
Assessment- 4 x journals (300 words each) (50%)
