A fashion sketchbook is a very important tool to take into consideration when developing a portfolio of work and to stimulate your creativity while building a rich body of work that visually explains your thought process from observation, research and realization. The aim of the course is to support students with the development of a theme from research, through fabric development and fresh fashion ideas development. You will learn to store anything that triggers your creative reaction and to arrange images that relate to each other so that each spread has a cohesive mood and direction.

About this course

- Use different sketchbook techniques to make an attractive sketchbook.
- Generate rich and diverse visual research
- Create visually appealing page layouts
- Clearly communicate a theme or message to an unfamiliar viewer
- Choose reoccurring themes or motifs in the image selection process
- Generate research ideas using mind-mapping process and sketches.

You will need to buy an A4 or A3 sketchbook and this will be discussed on the first day of the course.

The tutor will give talks, show practical applications, give demonstrations and set individual tasks. All activities will be constantly monitored to ensure specific needs are met. You will be able to set your own goals with the support of the tutor and you will receive informal feedback both individually and in-group discussion. Individual learning plans are completed by students and tutor to record progress and achievement.

Techniques to make your own sketchbook original and personal while sourcing efficient inspirations for fashion design. You will learn how to collate images in an attractive way using collage techniques, planning page layout, incorporating samples of fabrics and trimmings etc. You will learn to store in your sketchbook anything that elicits a strong creative reaction such as wall paper samples, sketches made in a café or on the street, pieces of creative writing, furniture and interior design, photographs and colour references taken from magazines or paint chip from hardware shops. You will learn to make your research and layouts rich and diverse while communicating effectively your ideas to the viewer.
