This course, designed for beginners, serves to provide a solid introduction to intaglio printmaking through the collagraph technique. You'll establish core skills key to intaglio printmaking and, through demonstrations, guidance and practice, learn to confidently explore your ideas and imagery to create a body of collagraph print works.

Course programme

The course will include: an introduction to intaglio printmaking, as students work with all aspects of collagraph technique, making plates and learning how to print them individually and as multi-plate prints, in black and white, and colour. a historical survey of collagraph prints from The Cass archive (examples for discussion) – characteristics of collagraph prints and process. making the plate, use of knives and cutting tools, texture and materials, PVA glue and types of modelling paste as well as preparing the plate for printing. handling paper and ink, wiping techniques, preparing the paper, readying the press and taking a print. colour inks, mixing ink, further wiping techniques, plate tone, dolly method, card, paper choice and preparation, registration methods and multiple plate work. health and safety issues in the workshop. By the end of the course, you'll: be informed about a range of intaglio/collagraph printmaking processes. demonstrate the acquisition of basic skills necessary to control and develop imagery through the various stages of collagraph print production. demonstrate the development of a critical awareness of your own practice. be familiar with good studio practice together with an understanding of all relevant health and safety considerations.
