This is a practical course focusing on producing a small collection of jewellery for men. You will have the opportunity to develop your own design ideas. You will design and make textured cufflinks, bracelets and rings using a variety of silver-smithing processes; for example casting small objects to set in a ring or as cufflinks using a variety of casting techniques. With the addition of leather or braided cord you will be able to experiment with knots and textured interlocking metal components to produce unique bracelets and cuffs. There will be optional extension exercises to explore how men's jewellery might develop to include watch chains, pocket adornment, hair ornaments.

About this course
- Produce several finished pieces of jewellery, and some samples
- Make rivets to join leather
- Use a variety of jewellery making processes, for example cutting, annealing and soldering metal, filing and polishing
- Use hammering techniques, the rolling mill and etching to make textured surfaces
- Cast small components for your project using a variety of casting methods.
A sketchbook and design ideas. Copper will be provided by the college, but precious metals and stones need to be provided by the student. (Tutor happy to advise).
Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged.

Course programme
We will look at examples of contemporary men’s jewellery, discuss and record ideas for new innovative jewellery.
- Casting with selft clay (rings and cufflinks).
- Casting with cuttlefish with emphasis on organic texture.
- Etching patterns to produce organic textured surfaces.
- Cutting, texturing and punching leather, rivets.
- Simple jewellery knots
- Forging bracelet components.
