Course programme

This series will introduce the basic principles of Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah) in accessible terms that can be understood by laymen. The three sessions are as follows: • The Basic Principles of the Kabbalah: This session will provide an explanation of the fundamental outlook and teachings of the Jewish mystical tradition and explore myths and misconceptions about the Kabbalah. • The Feminine Deity in Kabbalah: This session will explore the idea of the feminine dimension of God and how it has been incorporated into Sabbath rituals and prayers. • The Greatest Story Ever Told: This session will explain the teachings of Isaac Luria whose version of Kabbalah helped make Safed a centre of Jewish mystical practice. With David Ariel. David Ariel is President of the Oxford Centre of Hebrew and Jewish Studies, a recognized Independent Centre of the University of Oxford. Prior to moving to the UK in 2008, he was President of Siegal College. His MA and PhD were from Brandeis University in Jewish thought and Kabbalah. He is the author of four books including "Kabbalah: The Mystic Quest in Judaism" and "What Do Jews Believe?" Thursday evenings 7.30-9.00pm. 14, 21, 28 October
