For success in the knitwear industry, understanding the fabric is essential.
During this one-day workshop you’ll analyse knitted fabrics and learn how different approaches can alter the properties, quality and cost of a garment.

You’ll examine industrial knitting machinery to help you understand how knitted fabric is produced and turned into garments, before applying this knowledge to your own design specification.

About this course

You’ll leave the day with a detailed understanding of knitted fabric production and the different techniques that are applied to create colour, pattern and texture effects.
You’ll have created a technical specification for a knitted garment, identified quality control measures and examined basic costing issues.
You will also be sent a set of hand-outs and a glossary from the course.

This course is therefore suitable for industry professionals (assistant buyers, merchandisers, designers and technicians), students and educators who are new to knitwear, who might be changing the direction of their career or who want to communicate effectively with knit manufacturers.

On this course you will:

  • learn about knitted structures and patterning using colour and texture
  • learn about types of knitting machines, needles and gauges used in industry
  • understand knitted fabric properties, and the differences between warp and weft knitting
  • learn about cut and sew, fully fashioned, integral knitting and complete garment construction
  • examine the sampling process in a factory
  • explore quality control (wearer trial, abrasion, tension and more) and common problems
  • learn about measurement and grading of knitwear
  • produce a technical specification for a knitted garment
  • visit the university’s knit machinery and see hand-flat, flat-bed and circular machines.
