Techniques include burnishing and the use of terra sigilatta, naked and horsehair/feather raku, ferric fuming, and saggars.The workshop is most suitable for participants with at least a basic experience of working with clay who want to know more about these 'alternative' techniques. The 'Introduction' workshop is not primarily aimed at producing finished work but intended to give participants experience of different methods of achieving surface markings which they can then employ in their own work. More advanced workshops are also available.

John Evans will be leading the workshop. His work using alternative raku techniques is widely known in the UK and articles about his techniques have featured in 'Ceramic Review', 'Craft and Design' magazine and international publications. The workshop hours are 10.00 am - 5.00 pm.

About this course

The course is intended for ceramicists and potters at any level who are able to bring suitable bisque fired work and wish to learn about the decorating and firing techniques suitable for naked clay work.

Two Day Naked Clay Introduction Programme
Day One !0:00 After introductions and a general briefing we will move on to exploring how to create best surfaces for use with naked clay techniques. We will talk about the preferred clay and practice burnishing using test tiles. We will make Terra Sigillata (TS) We will also discuss, on an individual basis, your own bisqued test pieces to decide which are best suited to the different techniques.
11.30 A look at the kilns. How they work, how they are made, how they are fired. 12.15 Discussion on saggars and demonstration of the paper slip saggar making. 12.30 Lunch
13.30 Make Saggars ready for firing at 14:00.
14.15 Discussion and demonstration of naked raku decorating techniques
14.30 Participants to decorate work for naked raku two-step firing and apply resist slip/glaze
16.45 -17.00 Clean up and Finish for Day
Day Two
9.30 Apply slip to one-step naked raku pieces and start kiln
10.00 Opening Paper Saggars and discussing results
10.30 Start first Two-step Naked Raku firing
10.30 Apply glaze to remaining naked raku pieces
11.00 Open One-step Naked Raku kiln and reduce work
12.00 Open first NR kiln and reduce
13.00 Lunch
14.00 Continue naked raku firing through afternoon.
16.00 Horsehair/feather raku demonstration and firing
