Through guided observations of the model in pose, investigate the structure of the human head and relationship of the features. Practice selecting and composing observations of the portrait using step by step drawing and painting techniques. Learn to recognize key points and explore simple form, tone, colour, expression and build confidence.

About this course

• Draw and paint the portrait with more confidence
• Recognize key points through observation of the model in pose
• Understand the basic structure of the head and upper torso
• Improve awareness of effect of light and colour on form
• Select and compose visual information in a drawn or painted portrait.

A sketchbook A4 size is always useful but not mandatory.

• Introduction to the practice of Portraiture using artist examples
• How to observe the model in the pose
• Exploration of the structure of the head, torso and relationship of the features
• Use of perspective and visual elements shape, proportion, space, form, tone and colour
• Essential drawing and painting techniques using pencil. Charcoal, chalks and acrylic.

Group tuition, slide images, demonstration, discussion and Q & A. One to one tuition and feedback and peer critique.
