Course programme
This course aims to introduce the beginner to the principles and equipment used to light a live stage performance. The course begins by explaining the theory behind light and its behaviour. Electrical theory is also explored. We then move on to look at the different types of lighting intruments and how they behave, dimmers, and control desks. We then take students through the process of designing, rigging and lighting a show from square one principles. All of the theoretical knowledge is reinforced with practical exercises and demonstrations.
By the end of the course the students should be able to design and light a basic performance, select appropriate lighting fixures for the task, specify the correct type and quantity of dimmers and a suitable control system for the job at hand. They will also be able to implement a standard approach to the lighting design of a show, the get-in, rigging and focusing of the rig and the plotting of a show with the production team.
