Course description:
Introduction to wood engraving and relief printmaking. (*Note: We will be using plastic blocks) The course is suitable for the novice or those with experience. It is a 2 day course with the objective of giving the individual the opportunity of engraving and printing their own image. There will be an emphasis on equipping the individual with the information and knowledge to take up this medium and develop their own personal practice.
Day 1: We will start with a brief talk about the basic principles and will include the use of tools to engrave a test block which we will aim to print before lunch. Afternoon: Using the experience of completing the test block, we will aim to produce a suitable design, transfer this to a block and begin engraving.
Day 2: The morning will be spent continuing to engrave the design with the aim of completing this for printing using a cylinder press in the afternoon.
There will also be short talks and demonstrations throughout the two days covering tools, printing, paper, inks, sharpening. Information sheets will be supplied.
Plastic engraving blocks and materials will be provided. Tools will be provided for use during the course, but you are welcome to bring your own, and any sketchbooks and image ideas.
