Description of the Course
This course enables you to develop basic practical skills in Art, Design and Media. The main focus of the course is in drawing and design, creative use of computers, animation and three-dimensional artwork, with a small written element closely supporting practical study. You will also work towards Key Skills in Communication, AON and IT.
Course content
The main elements of the course are:

· Drawing, painting and other traditional visual studies
· Two and three dimensional design work
· Research skills
· Technical skills in animation and digital imaging
· Group and individual tutorials
· Fieldtrips

The course provides a basic, broad based introduction to the above areas, and when successfully completed is nationally recognised as being an equivalent to 2 GCSE's at Grade D.

Students may take additional qualifications at the same time as studying on this course, normally literacy, numeracy and IT qualifications.

The course is based in the College's purpose built modern Media, Art & Design Centre which has excellent newly redesigned art and design rooms, with printing and pottery facilities and multimedia computing suite.

Assessment
Most of the course is continuously assessed. Some units are externally assessed by exam. For coursework, students have to some written work, and evaluations showing some evidence of planning research and organisation.
Who is the course for?
The course is aimed at those who have some experience and interest in Art & Design, Media and Multimedia Design, and would like to progress to a 1st Diploma in Art and Design or Media.
Entry requirements
An average of Grade E for 2 or more GCSEs which must include an English Language written paper, or you may have succesfully completed an Entry Level 3 programme, along with an E3 literacy qualification. You may also be asked to demonstrate you commitment and skills in an interview by providing a small portfolio or sketchbook. If you don't have the required entry qualifications, there will be an opportunity for you to demonstrate you abilities to undertake the course.
What can I do after this course?
On completion, students have the opportunity to progress to a 1st Diploma in Art and Design or Media within the college.
