About this course

Having completed this qualification, you may chose to go on to higher education, via an HNC/D in Computing or a BSc degree qualification.

The pathway qualification can lead to (but not guarantee) an entry level post in the IT Industry. Throughout your two years on the course we actively encourage links with employers. Intermittently other employers inform us of any part-time or full-time vacancies in specific areas e.g. Help desk, Networking, or a week's work placement at BT, to our 1st and 2nd year BTEC IT students. These opportunities are not to be missed. If you are a motivated student you will be noticed and your name put forward.

5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including maths and English. OR
Level 2 BTEC qualification in IT - (Diploma) with a minimum recommended 340 points [4 Merits], plus
Functional Skills passes in English and maths at level 2. SkillsBuilder results will also be taken into consideration if the above requirement (Functional Skills at level 2 maths and English) is not met.

Course programme

There are two other "specialist" pathways to choose from:

  • Pearson Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Networking & Systems Support);
  • Pearson Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in IT (Software Development).

You will study 9 units in the 1st year (known as a separate qualification: the 90-Credit Diploma). If you are successful in all 9 units in the first year, then you will progress and do a further 9 units in the second year. These are carefully chosen to reflect the needs for education and training of the IT professional according to the pathway you have chosen, i.e. IT Networking or Programming.

Course Assessment Method

You will be continually assessed throughout the course with the submission of at least 2 assignments per unit. Deadlines must be strictly adhered to.

All students starting a course at the college are assessed for competency in maths and English, using the Skillsbuilder suite of programmes. Level 2 is the preferred outcome for you to be accepted on the course and comfortably progress. Once on the course, you should aim to have passed 3 units by December. You will also be assessed by being given a "free-writing" task where you will choose a topic from a limited list to write about for 20 minutes.

Irrespective of the "pathway" you choose, there are two units which are mandatory to pass. These deliver the foundations for the industry-wide recognised "soft" and "hard" skills needed by the ICT practitioner:

  • Unit 1: Communication and employability skills for IT;
  • Unit 2: Computer systems.
