Course programme

Italian Year 1

Course Aims:
This is a course for complete beginners in the language and aims to introduce students to Italian language and culture, developing confidence particularly in speaking and listening.

Course Content:
The very basics in the language including numbers and the alphabet, meeting and greeting , personal identity and everyday life, food and drink, shopping and getting around, naming and finding your way to places. An introduction to pronunciation and basic grammar, including present tense verbs as well as the immediate future, the use of nouns and adjectives and sentence structure and its application in practical situations. The course will also deal with elements of the Italian speaking culture and lifestyle. It combines in these new units the content of both the 30 hour Italian 1a and 1b units.

Progression:
From this level, it is possible to progress to year 2. If you wish to study the subject further in your own time, there are plenty of sources of information, such as the BBC learning zone, which broadcasts language programmes throughout the year, websites such as which provide general and specialised material and a variety of books and revision guides available in local shops. Your tutor can advise further and may recommend a particular book. This applies to languages at all levels and will be equally relevant if you decide to move onto a higher stage. Bear in mind too that is never too late to start learning.

Awarding Body:
OCN

Exam:
There is a small amount of assessment, simple, user friendly tasks to check your understanding of the subject. You will also produce a small portfolio of classwork, concentrating particularly on speaking and listening skills. The atmosphere is informal and encouraging and it is most important to participate and enjoy. Assessment will be informal and ongoing, an external EV will moderate the work at the end of the year.
