About the subject

The main aims are to help you to communicate confidently, clearly and effectively in Italian through both the written and spoken word; to develop your understanding of the spoken and written forms of Italian; to help you develop critical insights into, and contact with, the contemporary society, cultural background and heritage of countries where Italian is spoken.
At AS level, activities are based on the following topic areas: youth culture and concerns, life style: health and fitness, the world around us: travel and tourism, environmental issues, Italian-speaking world, education and employment.
At A2 level, activities are based on the following topic areas: citizenship, politics and current affairs, pollution and the environment, industry, customs, traditions and beliefs, world problems.

Learning Styles
Much use of Italian in classroom, most lessons include a variety of activities - expect the opportunity to speak in pairs or group work, listening to tapes, exercises to increase vocabulary, oral presentations, explanation and revision of grammar, short written tasks and pronunciation exercises. There will be a weekly lesson in the SALC (Self Access Language Centre), and at least one weekly lesson with an assistant, in both of which work is based on the topic areas listed above.
Subject combinations and progression
Useful with all combinations, but particularly Art and Design, Science, Business Studies, Politics; a language is essential for any student considering an Erasmus programme in HE; almost all students who take a language at degree level study it as part of a package. e.g. European Studies and Italian, Business Studies and Italian, Italian and Art and Design.
Subject modules and assessment
Unit 1 Oral 8-10 minutes.(AS 30%, A2 15%). Discussion on chosen topic area and allied subtopicsSpoken ExpreExtracts for listening comprehension requiring a variety of responses including one word answers and two short written paragraphs in Italian. Individual cds lasting 5-6 minutes.
Unit 2 Reading and Writing. 2 hours 30 mins (AS 70%, A2 35%). 3 sections: A listening: series of items, B reading comprehension extracts requiring a variety of responses in English and Italian, C writing 200-220 words as a report, letter, or article in Italian, based on written stimulus in Italian.
Unit 3 A2 Oral 11-13 minutes (A2 17.5%). Presenting and defending an argument on a topic of choice, followed by two other topic area discussions.
Unit 4 Reading and Writing. 2 hours 30 mins (A2 32.5%) 3 sections: A Translation, into Italian, B Italian language essay in response to a question from prescribed topic areas, C Italian researched based essay, based on geographical area, historical study, aspects of modern society or literature and the arts. (A2 32.5%).
