Gail Walkingshaw
Tutor
Gail Walkingshaw is the Principal of the Edinburgh Therapy Academy and has a thriving complimentary therapy business in her home clinic. Once Gail finished her BSc(Hons) Dietetics from Queen Margaret’s College Edinburgh she started her therapy career with Judith Craig, the Founder of the School in 1999 as one of the very first students, studying Reflexology. Over the years she went on to gain qualifications in Holistic Massage, Aromatherapy, Indian Head Massage, Thermo-Auricular Therapy, Remedial and Sports Massage and finally a Diploma in Teaching Complimentary therapies.
Course programme
Students wishing to achieve a Diploma in any therapy form must also study Anatomy & Physiology, unless they already have an existing ITEC qualification in this subject OR are awarded accreditation for prior learning by ITEC.
This course offers full tuition in classical Reflexology techniques, studying the history and pioneers of Reflexology with the therapeutic effects on the body, reflex points and zone therapy. Accompanied with a thorough understanding of Anatomy and Physiology, this diploma allows the student a completely holistic opportunity in treating clients without the need for the client to remove more than their socks and shoes.
The Reflexology Diploma can be used as a qualification by itself or as a starting point and entry requirement for more advanced techniques like Thai Reflexology or post graduate opportunities like Indian Head Massage.
What is Reflexology ?
Reflexology (zone therapy) is an alternative medicine method involving the practice of massaging, squeezing, or pushing on parts of the feet, or sometimes the hands and ears, with the goal of encouraging a beneficial effect on other parts of the body, or to improve general Health.
The theory suggests that areas on the foot correspond to areas of the body creating a map, and that by manipulating these one can improve health through one's feet.
The ITEC Diploma Course
The ITEC Diploma Course offers an accredited and internationally recognised level 3 qualification with a thorough grounding in Anatomy and Physiology, Pathology and extensive practical reflexology experience. This course is also recognised by the QCA (Qualifications Curriculum Authority) If this is the first ITEC qualification then the Reflexology Diploma is coupled with an ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY Diploma (level 3) which runs on a separate weekend within the month. This only needs to be studied once, so if additional courses are to be undertaken then the Anatomy & Physiology does not need to be repeated.
There is also a business requirement for ITEC qualifications and this is accounted for in the Practical days as one whole day of training with PROFFESIONAL CONDUCT/BUSINESS AWARENESS. This only needs to be sat once, so if additional courses are to be undertaken then the business element does not have to be repeated.
Assessment
There is a 1hour theory exam which is 50 multiple choice questions for Reflexology and an Hour long Practical Assessment with an ITEC appointed external examiner. There is also a case study load of 10 clients each to be
treated 4 times thus giving 40 documented treatments.
