This is an informal study group for performing pianists, meeting 6 times in the year to explore, discuss, transcribe and play samples of work by important jazz pianists of the last 70 years.
Meetings are on the following 6 Sunday afternoons : 28 October, 2 December, 20 January, 24 February, 24 March and 5 May.

About this course

- Transcribe solos with increased facility
- Apply techniques and features found in recordings to your own playing
- Display improved aural skills
- Play interesting solos.

Material will be provided by the tutor, but you may need to buy cds or download tracks for study. Bring a memory stick to class. Familiarity with tutor's book 'Exploring Jazz Piano' Volume 2 (Schott music 2005) is desirable. Bring the book to class along with A4 manuscript paper.

Course programme

- In depth listening to jazz piano recordings in a variety of styles
- Transcription and analysis of recorded solos
- Application of stylistic and technical features from recordings to your own solos.

The tutor will suggest pianists, tracks, tunes and specific recordings for study (suggestions also welcome). Help will be given with analysis and transcribing of solos. During the time between class meetings you will need to spend time listening to and transcribing material. Sharing of insights and techniques will be a major part of our activities, with students able to compare notes and perform to each other.
