Overview
Our Late Antique and Byzantine Studies MA covers an exciting and varied field of study spanning the history and culture of the Eastern Mediterranean world during the period that begins with the foundation of Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 330 and ends with the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453. As well as exploring the history of region through a variety of themes – history, literature, material culture, philosophy and theology – the course will also help you to develop proficiency in vital research skills, including the use of ancient languages (Medieval Greek or Latin), palaeography, epigraphy and papyrology.
Leads to further research or careers in education, journalism, finance, politics and cultural sectors.

Course programme

Year 1 Required Modules

You are required to take:

  • Research Training and Dissertation in LABS (60 credits)

You are also required to take at least 40 credits from the following list:

  • Latin Epigraphy (40 Credits)
  • Beginners’ Ancient Greek for Research (40 Credits)
  • Intermediate Ancient Greek for Research (40 Credits)
  • Medieval Latin Literature (40 Credits)
  • Skills for Medievalists: Paleography I (20 Credits)

If you are a part-time student, you will take the Research Training and Dissertation in LABS module in your second year, along with 40 credits from the list of optional modules. You will take the rest of the required modules in your first year.

Optional Modules

You are required to take two to four modules from a range of optoinal modules which may typically include:

  • One God, One Sea: Byzantium & Islam, 600-800 (20 Credits)
  • Byzantium & the West, A. D. 800-1000 (20 Credits)
  • Living in Byzantium I: Material Culture and Built Environment in Late Antiquity (20 Credits
  • Living in Byzantium II: Material culture and built environment in the Middle Ages (20 Credits)
