The lawyer is a professional expert in law who provides assistance in favor of a party in the trial, acting as a consultant and legal representative, both judicial and extra-judicial, on behalf of his client. In the history of Roman law, the profession of lawyer was highly coveted due to the implications it had in the political field and many famous personalities, such as Quinto Ortensio Ortalo and Marco Tullio Cicero, distinguished themselves in the courtrooms. The figure of the lawyer is in contemporary age disciplined in different ways in the various states of the world; the European Union directive n. 98/5 / EC of February 16, 1998 introduced the possibility of setting up special partnerships between lawyers. In almost all countries of the world, to be able to practice the profession it is necessary to have a suitable qualification as well as compulsory membership of a given professional order, with the obligation to register in a professional register: however, the regulation of registration the register differs from state to state. The professional order to which he belongs is generally defined as the "Bar Association", commonly also the bar, since in ancient Rome the bar was located in the Roman Forum. The Bar Association is the custodian of the professional register (the register of lawyers) in which lawyers must necessarily be registered in order to be authorized to practice the profession. The lawyer in possession of the requisites required by law, performs the function of representing, assisting and defending a party in a trial in a court, but in general it is competent to provide legal assistance and advice even outside of a judicial proceeding, and they carry out their activity upon payment of a fee called fee . Many legal systems, in order to guarantee the exercise of the right to defense, provide for the appointment of a lawyer in a trial of an official defender in favor of those who do not have the necessary means.
