Leadership and Management - Postgraduate Certificate

The course consists of the following four compulsory modules:

Compulsory modules

• Leading and Managing People develops your understanding of, and skills, in leading and managing individuals and teams. We will explore the core concepts of leadership, as well as tools and techniques for performance management.
• Personal Mastery in Leadership helps you develop critical self-knowledge with the help of theory and practice of self-leadership. You will consider how personal characteristics such as resilience, courage, personal integrity, consistency and self-awareness are all critical in supporting your own development and that of others.
• Principles of Change Practice explores the concepts of change practice and implementation, focusing in particular on resistance to change in complex organisations and how to overcome this.
• Human Resource Management in Organisations enables you to locate the HRM role within a broader organisational strategy, and discuss approaches for performance management, organisational capability building, employee development and employee participation.

Students will also complete one of the two following modules:

• Principles of Change Practice will develop your knowledge using current theories, tools and techniques for change implementation and practice. This will include learning to implement change within an organisational structure, interact with stakeholders and evaluate processes of resistance to change.
• Leading Change aims to develop your skills as a practitioner of change leadership. By learning different theories you will be able to identify the drivers of change in organisations and understand effective change leadership through key roles, behaviours and processes.

Progressing to a Diploma or Masters

Once you have completed the Postgraduate Certificate, you may have the option of progressing onto a Diploma or Masters in Leadership and Management.

The University continually enhances our offer by responding to feedback from our students and other stakeholders, ensuring the curriculum is kept up to date and our graduates are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need for the real world. This may result in changes to the course. If changes to your course are approved we will inform you.

We use a range of different teaching styles and activities to maximise the impact of the learning on this course, including experiential activities, group exercises, tutor-led and student-led discussions, and reflective exercises.

You will have high levels of autonomy, and be encouraged to share your own experiences and ground your learning in the realities of the workplace.

We will challenge your existing perspectives, encourage creative thinking, and develop self-reflection skills and much of the material will have direct relevance to your career and lifelong learning.

All the tutors are experts in their fields, who are renowned in their academic areas, as well as being experienced practitioners within organisations themselves.

Part-time

The course is offered on a part-time basis over one year, to fit around current work commitments. It is structured in a block format with each module lasting three days.

You are expected to spend approximately 150 hours worth of time on each module, including the time spent in taught sessions and supervision.

A range of assessments are used across the modules. All aim to test your ability to link the theory to current practice, and link in to your personal and professional development needs. Each assessment includes a self-reflective element, with a mix of essays, portfolio development, case study analysis and mini-presentations. You will have around six weeks to complete your assessments after the end of each module.
