Course programme

The Lean Manufacturing module will introduce your people to the fundamental concepts and philosophy of lean, combined with the essential support tools and techniques they will need to apply lean practically within your organisation. To achieve the qualification individuals must undertake a practical improvement project to implement what they have learnt.

The results

On completion, individuals will understand:

  • The concept of lean thinking, its evolution, application and current best practice.
  • The importance of leadership, culture and strategy in relation to lean thinking, and in connection with a particular situation.
  • The application of business performance measures and how to use them in order to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Value stream improvement.
  • How to apply lean thinking to a work based project using relevant tools and techniques.

This will help your company to:

Reduce costs by allowing your people to seek out and eliminate waste and tighten up on efficiency.

Cut unnecessary stock and work in progress by coaching them how to work ‘Just In Time'.

For the individual:

Participants will receive a City & Guilds Licentiateship qualification, awarded through the University of Leeds. This is a nationally recognised higher education qualification focused on improving an individual's ability to add value to your organisation.

The content

  • Lean concepts and terminology including value added, non-value added and waste.

  • Strategy and deployment models.

  • Leadership and culture.

  • Performance measures, data collection and analysis.

  • Approach to improvement: Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA); Kaizen.

  • Process mapping, value streams, defining value.

  • Basic tools - workplace organisation, standard work.

Commitment required

A typical module requires approximately 3 days of contact time, spread across a period of approximately 8 weeks (but this can be flexed to suit your company's needs).

Taught sessions are delivered in ‘learning sets' (or project teams) of approximately 6-8 delegates.

Following the taught sessions, each individual must complete an assessed work-based project focused on improving a particular area of your business, which will require additional study and preparation time.
