Course description
Our English language courses improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills. This course is for non-native speakers of English who want to improve their English language skills for general or academic purposes in preparation for a Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course.
Your English language proficiency is tested on the first day of the course, and students with similar abilities are placed into the same class.
We provide an enjoyable and stimulating atmosphere where you are encouraged to actively take part so that you can improve as quickly as possible. You are given regular homework and self-study guidance to help you practise and revise class work.

Progression onto the Pre-sessional Course in English for Academic Purposes
If you need a particular IELTS score to start a degree, you need to progress onto the Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes.
You can progress onto this course when you have achieved a minimum level equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or above. If you
If you achieve the SPEAP (Summer Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes) English language entry requirements at the end of the April LEAP course, you progress onto the SPEAP 10-week course with the intention of starting your UG/PG degree in September or October.
If you DO NOT achieve the SPEAP English language entry requirements at the end of the April LEAP course, you progress onto the June LEAP 10-week course. If you then achieve the APEAP (Autumn Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes) English language entry requirements at the end of the June LEAP 10-week course, you progress onto the APEAP 10-week course with the intention of starting your UG/PG degree in January or February. This option will only suit students who have a degree course starting in January or February.

About this course

Prepare for your Pre-sessional English for Academic Purposes course with this English language course. Designed for non-native speakers of English, your level of English proficiency is tested so that you can work with students of similar abilities throughout your course. You are encouraged to take part in classroom activities and are given homework to help you improve your English quickly.

The University's dedicated TESOL provision is accredited by the British Council for students who are aged 18 years and over and therefore the minimum age we will accept for ELT support is 18. We advise younger students who require further TESOL qualifications in order to meet the University’s entry requirements to apply to a provider accredited by British Council as providing courses suitable for under 18s.
