- Write italic, Roman capitals and versal letterforms- Use a range of tools and art materials with confidence- Modify photographic images- Combine drawn images with compatible letterformsMore advanced students:- Work on self directed projects with help from the tutor.

Basic materials will be provided and you may want to get other materials as the course progresses.

Course programme

Over the course you will be experimenting with letterforms and illustrations using pencils, automatic pens, and
flexible nibs. You will explore different paper surfaces and some aspects of paper craft. The workshops will also cover design and layout, colour theory, creating mood boards and gathering your own reference material.


In class there will be group and individual demonstrations and practical work. "
About your tutor:
Sharon Shaw
A practising calligrapher and lettering artist whose clients include JWT, Cafod, Honno Press, Roehampton University, The London Film School and the British Antiques Dealers’ Association. She studied Calligraphy and Bookbinding course at Roehampton Univeristy and gained a first class honours degree in 2003. In 2010 she was awarded Fellowship of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. Sharon’s other courses at City Lit are: Callligraphy for Beginners and Lettering with Illustration .

You may be interested in enrolling in the City Lit summer school calligraphy courses before the main programme starts again in September. Your tutor will be able to advise you during this course.
