NVQ Level 1 Hairdressing (C7519P)

What are the Course Details?
This course is designed to provide an introduction to hairdressing and to act as a stepping stone for those learners who are looking to progress to Level 2.

Is the Course for Me?
Candidates must have a genuine interest in hairdressing as a profession and be able to stand for long periods of time while completing treatments.

What will I Learn?
To achieve this qualification learners must complete the following units:

G1 Ensure Your Own Actions Reduce Risks to Health & Safety
G2 Assist with Salon Reception Duties
G3 Contribute to the Development of Effective Working Relationships
H1 Shampoo & Condition Hair
H37 Assist with Colouring Services
H5 Prepare for Hairdressing Services & Maintain Work Area

All units must be successfully completed to receive the full NVQ Level 1 and to progress onto Level 2.

Learners may also be able to study additional qualifications, such as:
  • Ear Piercing
  • Make-up
  • Manicure
  • Manufacturers Diplomas (if available)

How will I Learn?
The course provides a good mix of both theoretical and practical training sessions. Learners will build a portfolio of evidence, guidance is given on format but learners are responsible for collecting the evidence. This is monitored regularly.

Training takes place in 'Images', North Lindsey College's purpose built and well-equipped salon, with specialist equipment and highly trained staff. As such, learners are required to supply and wear a salon uniform, comprising a black skirt or trousers (not jeans), black tunic top and black full shoes. Learners must also supply a hairdressing kit and the appropriate course text book. Tutors will be able to advise on appropriate costs for these, and applicants can apply for financial assistance to help towards costs.

Learners may be expected to work in the evening in Images as part of their preparation for working in the industry. Practical sessions will involve assisting a stylist within the salon.

How will I be Assessed?
There is no formal examination on the course. All work is continually assessed. A portfolio is produced by generating evidence of competence.

It is brought to your attention that although North Lindsey College will endeavour to obtain clients throughout the course, it is the learners own responsibility to ensure they have enough models to obtain their qualification.

What Enrichments are Available?
Learners will have access to various activities within the College to develop and broaden their experience of College life.

The following Functional Skills are integrated into the course: Application of Number, and Communication.

Are there any Trips or Visits?
There may be opportunities to visit seminars, trade fairs and exhibitions at an additional cost to the learner.

Is there any Work Experience?
Work experience is built into the course.

What can I Progress to?
On completion of Level 1, learners can progress onto the NVQ Level 2 Hairdressing course, subject to recommendation by their course tutor and interview.

Learners must have 85% attendance to be able to progress to the next level.

Other Learner's Experiences;
Previous learners have now gone on to fulfil their ambition of full-time employment within the industry.

A range of success stories are on display in the Images building. Including written comments from past learners.

Please Note:
Acceptance onto courses may be subject to a satisfactory interview and references. For some courses learners may also be required to pay for a CRB disclosure.
