Course programme

The programme opens up career opportunities as a hair and make-up artist in the fashion world, television or other media areas, usually working freelance. There are also opportunities available for progression onto Higher Education and further study either at HND or degree level, depending on prior experience and qualifications.

Achievement of this qualification could lead to a job as a make-up artist working in one of the following establishments:
• Photographic studios
• Department stores
• Make-Up stores
• Salon

You could also work as a freelance make-up artist.

In addition to time spent in College you are expected to complete assignments and other work in your private study time either at home or in College. Work experience is an important aspect of your skills development and will require evening and weekend work in hair and make-up. You will be required to attend an evening session – the class will usually end by 8.00pm.

You will need 2 GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or better, or a successful completion of a Level 1 Hairdressing or Beauty course. A qualification in an art related subject is desirable, however a keen interest in media make-up with evidence within a portfolio is essential.

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.
