Course Overview
Foundation Art & Design (FAD) is the most rewarding and experimental creative experience prior to your degree or employment. It will offer you the opportunity to build on and develop your thinking and making skills and to discover your creative talents. FAD will support you in developing an open-minded working practice that will give you a variety of approaches to creative problem solving. It will also help you to create an individualised and intelligent portfolio that will enable you to apply to the university of your choice.
FAD is split into 3 stages:
In the first stage you will explore creative practice through a range of rotational projects in Fine Art, Three-dimensional Design, Fashion and Textiles, and Graphic Visual Communication.
In the second stage you will receive your own studio space and undergo a series of tailored and self-initiated projects. These will build upon the techniques and skills introduced in stage one and integrate these through further exploration and problem solving activities. You will also be asked to prepare and present a piece of creative writing that challenges your ideas. Alongside your studies, you will also be supported in making an application to UCAS, internships, and jobs.
In the third stage you will undergo a final project that culminates in a final year exhibition. This final project is the only piece of work to be graded and this grade will reflect your entire year’s work.
Through this course you will be guided to grow in confidence about the direction of your work and identify strengths and weaknesses through regular one to one meetings with a personal tutor. You will be able to develop skills and learn quickly allowing plenty of opportunities for you to achieve your creative potential.
Please note that the college will provide some materials and equipment whilst you study. However, there is an expectation of additional material costs of approximately £30 per term. Day trips to galleries and other places of interest usually cost between £25-30 within the year. You may be eligible for a bursary and this should cover the cost of equipment.
Good English and maths skills are essential for success in studying and for future employment prospects and so Croydon College ensures that these skills are developed in all learning opportunities.
It’s also important to have good English and maths qualifications and so all students will study English and maths and work towards an appropriate level and type of qualification including GCSE. This will be part of all 16-18 year old students’ Study Programme alongside their main vocational or academic qualification and will be discussed with students at interview.
Please note advance applications for September 2016 for this course have now closed. However, you can still come in to apply and enrol during our open enrolment period between Tuesday 30 August and Friday 9 September. .
