Dental Nurses assist Dentists with all aspects of patient care, from sterilising instruments and recording patient information to passing instruments and participating during advanced, specialist treatment.

About this course


This apprenticeship is suitable for those who are currently working within this sector or are looking to gain employment within this sector as a qualified Dental Nurse.

This is dependent on your employer and on the level of the apprenticeship you apply for.

You will normally need at least grade C or above in your English and maths GCSEs. If you don't have these, don't worry. You can work towards your functional skills in English and maths alongside your apprenticeship training at St Helens College.

What type of work will I do and what qualifications will I gain?

Although apprenticeships will vary depending on your entry level and your employer, you will gain a range of skills from the varying tasks you complete, these could include:

  • Decontamination of instruments and infection control before, during and after a dental procedure.
  • Helping ensure health and safety in the workplace.
  • Setting up the surgery for dental procedures.
  • Caring for all patients before, during and after treatment.
  • Assisting the clinician in all chair side procedures by anticipating, passing and receiving instruments and items.
  • Handling dental materials.
  • Recording charting.
  • Processing and mounting radiographs.
  • Ordering stock.
  • Liaising with dental labs; communicating to ensure a smooth running practice. Effective communication is key to good teamwork.
  • Communicating with patients.
  • Putting patient's best interests first, always ensuring a patient clearly understands and is at ease.
  • Complying with all organisational and legal requirements.
  • Working well as a team; ensure all tasks are completed on time and to the required standard.
  • Ensuring patient records are saved and stored according to confidentiality.
  • Keeping up to date with the latest training and requirements.

Additional information

As an apprentice, you will be assigned an assessor, who will visit you in the workplace to observe the tasks you complete. You will also complete a number of relevant work?related modules at the College. All of which will contribute to the overall success of your apprenticeship.
