Mathematics Single
AS/A2 Level - Two-year course
Mathematics is a vital subject for students interested in any of the sciences or engineering. It is a distinct advantage for students of economics, accountancy, computing, psychology, business studies and geography.

Mathematics also has its own intrinsic interest. The methods used are effective in many contexts. Using calculus, for example, you can find the flight path of a rocket or the most economic design for packaging.

In year one (AS), students will extend the range of mathematical techniques they acquired during GCSE studies. They will also study Decision Maths.

In year two (A2), the study modules build on and extend the techniques gained in year one. In addition, the course aims to enable students to read and comprehend examples of the application of mathematics as presented in mathematical articles. Statistics is also studied. The amount of reading is small by comparison with other subjects, but classes regularly generate mathematical problems to be solved as homework. There is practical work using computers and graphics calculators. Students need a graphics calculator - Texas Ti-83 is recommended for A2.

Careers and Further Studies
There are a large number of careers in which mathematics plays a significant part. These include: accountancy; air traffic control; architecture; armed forces; banking; computing; economics; engineering; medicine; and sciences of all types.

General Entry Requirements
Students will need the following:
1. An average GCSE points score of 4.7 calculated from your eight best GCSEs or equivalent vocational qualifications but must include GCSE Maths and English Language.
2. At least five GCSEs at grade C or above which must include GCSE English Language.
