Brief Description of the Course

Candidates for this Advanced Apprenticeship (AA) in Farriery must be at least 16 years of age however there is no upper age limit.

Candidates must serve a period of Apprenticeship of four years and two months whilst employed by an Approved Training Farrier (ATF).

An ATF is a person who is a Registered Farrier and fulfils the criteria laid down by the Farriers Registration Council (FRC), who oversee the training of Farriery Apprentices in Great Britain.

The period of Apprenticeship includes a two month designated `probationary period` which is specifically for the ATF to assess the Apprentice with the horse.

Entry Criteria

The minimum entry requirements are currently either:

¨ 5 GCSE passes at Grade C or above, which must include English Language, Mathematics (Scottish, Northern Ireland, and EU equivalents may apply but will be required to complete Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths) and Science.

¨ An NVQ Level 2 which includes a science module and the Level 2 Key/Functional Skills of Communication and Application of Number.

¨ A BTEC First Diploma which includes a science module and the Key/Functional Skills.

¨ Equivalent qualifications may apply, please contact the College for further information. It is the responsibility of each applicant to provide proof that any qualifications held are equivalent to or higher than the specified minimum educational entry requirements.

¨ All candidates must have achieved the NPTC Forging Certificate.

¨ Please be aware that we cannot accept Adult Numeracy or Adult Literacy level 2 as an equivalent to the GCSE English and Maths. Functional Skills Level 2 English and Maths are the mandatory requirement.

Assessments: Candidates must complete the following:

During the course of this training and in order to be eligible for registration onto the Register of Farriers via this Apprenticeship the following outcomes must be successfully completed by the apprentice:-

¨ Technical Certificate- WCF Diploma in Farriery (QCF)

¨ Practical, Theory and Oral exam

¨ Level 3 Diploma in Farriery ( work-based) (1st4sport)

¨ English and mathematics functional Skills ( Level 2) (if applicable)

¨ College Certificate in Business

¨ 6 Personal Learning and Thinking Skills

¨ Employee Rights and Responsibilities

Training is split between 'on the job‘ training in the workplace with the ATF and 'off the job' training totalling 23 weeks in College. These 23 weeks are on average 3 week blocks spread over the 4 years.
