This qualification is focused on employing a range of methods to massage uninjured clients in sport and active leisure, therefore graduates of this programme will be equipped to work in an unsupervised capacity throughout the sport and active leisure industry. This qualification is recognised as an approved qualification for continued professional development (CPD) by the Sports Massage Association.
It also provides progression opportunities to additional courses such as: Level 4 Sports Massage.

If the student wishes to work with pathological (injured) tissue they will need to complete the level 4 course as suggested above.

Course programme

In this qualification learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of the theory underpinning the practice of sports massage therapy, including functional anatomy and physiology, nutrition, classification of sports injuries and the stages of healing. It will also provide learners with the understanding; skills and techniques to plan, prepare for and apply a range of sports massage methods to uninjured clients. Learners will also develop skills to evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on future practice. Students will need to commit to the College sessions, home study and keeping a log of hours of work practice (this must be gained through work placement and attendance of sports massage events, sourced by the student). Unit 1: Functional Anatomy, Physiology & Nutrition for Sports Therapies. This unit will be assessed through workbooks and there will be an external written exam paper that requires a 70% pass mark. Unit 2: Applying Sports Massage Methods to Non Pathological Tissue (Non injury). This unit will be assessed through practical assessments, case studies and workbooks.Class room delivery, practical demonstrations, practice on each other, home study and work packs, work log, practical assessment and 1 written assessment paper.
