2. Course description From the minute we awake to an alarm clock, to the music we listen to, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the transportation we use, the roads and bridges we use, and the buildings we all inhabit; every aspect of our daily life involves engineering in some form. Engineers are the inventors and problem-solvers of our everyday world, they shape our society and they influence and develop the environment and technology of our future. The role of electrical and electronic engineers is of particular relevance in today's challenging world of energy shortage and global warming. They design and develop innovative and renewable energy solutions and the supporting transmission infrastructure to deliver power where it is needed in a timely and efficient manner. Low carbon renewable technologies, such as fuel cells, wave power generators and wind turbines, are being designed by power systems engineers while electronic engineers develop the sensing, control and communications systems to guarantee their safe and efficient operation.
