Course programme

SWMP; Site Waste Management Plan

The Environmental Academy has a strong reputation for helping construction businesses manage their environmental performance and improve site efficiency. This led to DEFRA appointing consultants from the Academy to run a pilot study and develop training material to assist the construction industry in complying with the requirements of Site Waste Management Plans (SWMP).

It is delivered via a half day advanced SWMP workshop and up to 5 half day site visits from a mentor to assist with writing and then implementing the SWMP for your organisation.

This course will include a detailed support pack and all information the learner requires to build their portfolio of evidence.

This will include an electronic copy of our template SWMP and associated procedure developed by The Environmental Academy. This template SWMP has been developed to be as simple and user friendly as possible whilst meeting all the requirements of the legislation.

Delegates attending this course will be required to complete the level 2 qualification as unit 1 of the overall qualification. The remaining 3 units are outlined below:

Unit 2 - Advanced Site Waste Management Knowledge

Aim: To provide a detailed knowledge of best practice for successful SWMPs.

The learner will: Know the history and evolution of SWMPs, know the duties and responsibilities of key players to ensure compliance with the SWMP regs, know the purpose of SWMPs, know the key elements of a SWMP, and know where to find additional information for environmental and waste best practice on site.

Unit 3 - Writing a Site Waste Management Plan

Aim: To develop and demonstrate the skills necessary to write a full SWMP that meets the requirements of current legislation.

The learner will: Produce a Site Waste Management Plan to meet the requirements of the SWMP regulations, and demonstrate compliance with the Duty of Care Regulations.

Unit 4 - Implementing a Site Waste Management Plan

Aim: To verify the skills to implement a successful SWMP that meets the requirements of current legislation

The Learner will: Make provision for material storage, make provision for waste disposal, communicate the SWMP to staff working for and on behalf of the organisation, train relevant staff on requirements of SWMP, reduce, re-use, recycle and recover waste where practicable, regularly review the SWMP, demonstrate legal compliance on site, make arrangements for continual improvement, and know the requirements for security measures.
