This exciting new qualification provides you with specialist practical skills and knowledge which will equip you to seek employment or progression within the Media Make-up Industry. Either a Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up or equivalent industry experience is a recommended entry requirement.

This qualification is suitable for anyone over the age of 16. A well-groomed and professional appearance is essential as you will be working with the public and need to present a professional image. Great importance is also placed on reliability requiring regular attendance and punctuality. You will be advised of any materials you will need to purchase for your course when you attend the Welcome Event/Progression interview.  

This qualification covers a very wide range of practical skills and knowledge required for working in the media make-up artistry industry.

These are compulsory areas:
• Working in the film, TV and theatre industry • Create historical hair and make-up looks • Media make-up creative hair design • Fashion and photographic make-up
• The creation and presentation of a look book and industry portfolio • Apply body art • Camouflage make-up

Optional areas include:
• Cutting and styling techniques for performers • Avant-guard hair and make-up • The evolution of cosmetics and retail • Specialist bridal hair and make-up • Media Make-up blogging

Course programme

The programme opens up career opportunities as a hair and makeup artist in the fashion world, television or other media areas, usually working freelance. There are also opportunities available for progression onto Higher Education and further study either at HND or degree level, depending on prior experience and qualifications.

Achievement of this qualification demonstrates to an employer that you have the necessary advanced technical skills to be employed as a Make-up Artist.

This qualification could lead to a job as a:
• Photographic make-up artist
• Editorial make-up artist
• TV make-up artist
• Video make-up artist
• Freelance make-up artist
• Specialist bridal make-up artist.

This Course is suitable for anybody over the age of 16.

You will need a full Level 2 qualification, a college reference and a successful interview. Each candidate will be considered on their experience, suitability and previous course references showing good attendance and behaviour and a genuine interest in the beauty therapy industry. You will be interviewed as part of the College Welcome Event or if currently studying at Cambridge Regional College, will need you to complete an internal progression form and attend a progression interview with the beauty therapy team. You will be required to complete a trade test.

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a Welcome Event/Interview.

Assessment will take place in The Park, where the college's new specialist salons are based. You will have the opportunity to use an extensive range of high quality products and excellent specialist equipment. We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at CRC. • The programme is assessed throughout the year in a number of ways:
• By demonstrating your practical competence on your peers in the studio to a level required in employment. You may also be encouraged to work on family, friends and fee paying clients in the college salon.
• Answering oral questions as part of the practical assessment to demonstrate your treatment knowledge and understanding
• Compiling a portfolio of work undertaken during the year
• Answering written questions and assignments set by your tutor
• Taking part in an externally moderated practical assignment – This may take place outside of your regular college hours.
• On-line testing

In addition to time spent in College you are expected to complete assignments and other work in your private study time either at home or in College. Work experience is an important aspect of your skills development and will require evening and weekend work in hair and makeup. You may be required to attend an evening session - the class will usually end by 8.00pm
