This two year part-time programme provides you with specialist scientific practical techniques training alongside the development of requisite knowledge and understanding. The course can also be taken in conjunction with a BTEC Higher Apprenticeship. The course, the equivalent of a first year at university, is aimed mainly at working scientists - offering enhanced training for biological scientists currently employed in technical work and the skills and knowledge for employment in biologically-based industries.

There are 4 core units for the BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma. These are:
•   Cell Biology
•   Laboratory Techniques for Applied Biology
•   Analysis of Scientific Data and Information
•   Work based investigation. You will need to arrange your own work experience or employment in a science based workplace.

Optional Units will be taken from:
•  Chemistry for Applied Biologists
•  Laboratory Management
•  Biochemistry of Macromolecules and Metabolic Pathways
•  Physiology of Cellular Systems in Animals
•  Personal and Professional Development (done in workplace)

Some units are designed to be completed in a scientific place of work under guidance from college staff and employers. Please also note that units are subject to change.

This is classed as a part-time course - on successful completion of the two years, you will gain a BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma. You can achieve a BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma by studying a further two years.

Home and EU students are eligible to apply for a loan from the Student Loans Company.

Course programme

This programme is a Level 4 qualification which is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge for successful employment in biological/chemical based industries or further education and training for scientists currently employed in a variety of technical work. It may also enable progression to an undergraduate degree or further professional qualifications or to the BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Biological Sciences for Industry at Cambridge Regional College.

If you are under 21 years at the start of the course you must have one of the following:

- 2 A levels at grade A* - E, in two relevant sciences e.g. Biology and Chemistry.
- or a Pass at an equivalent Level 3 qualification (e.g. BTEC L3 Diploma),
- plus English and Maths GCSE at grades 9 - 4 (A* - C).

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on a course will be subject

- Completion of an initial assessment prior to interview
- A successful interview
- A satisfactory reference

In addition to the entry qualifications listed, the offer of a place on the course is subject to the outcomes of initial assessment, which will be taken at the College as part of the admissions process. Please note that entry criteria may vary quite significantly between courses at the same level. This is to take account of the specific skills needed for success on particular courses, the length of the course and the requirements for progression to the next level. Entry criteria are given as a guide, and the exact requirements in order to obtain a place on a particular course will be confirmed following attendance at a professional interview.

Each project, activity or assignment that you complete will be assessed. These assessments indicate your level of performance and contribute to your final grade. Each unit is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Assessment will be through continuous practical and theoretical assignments.
