This two year qualification will equip all those who wish to teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (16+) and replaces the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Life Long Sector (DTLLS). The programme is designed for in-service teachers. The programme consists of mandatory units at level 4 (HE Level 1) and Level 5 (HE Level 2), and is awarded at Level 5. It has a total value of 120 credits. The Diploma requires at least 100 hours of teaching practice across the two years. There must be a minimum of 8 observations completed during the two years, totalling a minimum of 8 hours. Trainees will be provided with an academic tutor throughout. Please note that L3 Award in Education & Training is not a pre-requisite for entry on to the level 5. The course fee will cover the cost for the whole course.

Course programme

Successful completion of the L5 Diploma allows trainees to progress to Professional Formation; a process that will enable QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills). QTLS is formally recognised as equivalent to QTS and allows teaching in schools (pre-16), Sixth Forms, language schools etc.

Appropriate competence and fluency in written and spoken English.
All participants should hold a Vocational qualification at minimum NQF level 3.
Minimum of 100 hours teaching practice (50 hours per year).
For the purposes of the award teaching is defined as full group teaching. We define a group as more than 5 students. The trainee must be leading the group in terms of writing schemes of work, lesson planning and assessment.
Teaching must be across at least 2 different levels e.g. Entry 3 and Level 2.
Please note this is a 2-year programme and so teaching should be arranged to enable completion of the qualification. Minimum age at entry 19+.

The course comprises mandatory and optional units which are assessed using a range of methods. These can be written essay/reports, peer observations, reflective journal entries and presentations. A significant percentage of trainee study and assignment completion will be done independently. Attendance of 100% is expected. Learning support which includes academic study skills is available as necessary.
