Course programme

Your programme begins with an assessment to confirm you are in a position to complete the NVQ and an induction – where you get to know what is expected of you, the assessment criteria and methods. Your NVQ programme includes the development of an action plan to take you to completion of the qualification.

Includes:

• Assessment and induction
• Registration and certification with City & Guilds
• 11 mandatory units and 1 unit required to meet Grad IOSH requirements
• Optional E-portfolio access for 12 months
• 7 assessments of achievement, including a direct on-site observation of your work, which is a mandatory requirement of City & Guilds
• Email helpline for general queries for 12 months
The course is work-based and designed to enable very flexible learning. The programme is available on a face-to-face basis at our premises or can be conducted in-house in your premises if you have a number of candidates who require the qualification. Scheduled induction sessions are arranged at our premises throughout the year to get you started efficiently.

Alternatively, the initial assessment/induction, submission and assessment of evidence can be conducted on-line, using our e-portfolio system. This provides great flexibility and enables you to get started and complete your qualification without being tied to attendance at our premises.

COURSE MATERIALS

Course materials to complete the qualification, including assessment criteria, are integrated into our e-portfolio system.
Depending on your knowledge and experience you may need to develop your understanding in order to do some of the NVQ activities effectively. This can be done by using appropriate reference books. We has authored and published in conjunction with RMS Publishing a series of three Diploma level study books that are suitable for use with the City & Guilds Level 5 NVQ Diploma. They reflect the knowledge requirements that candidates will use to fulfil the workplace performance criteria of the Diploma and would make essential reading for candidates that are just starting formal health and safety studies. They provide abridged and contextual reference to legislation and contain supporting illustrations, photographs of workplaces and sample forms.

ASSESSMENT

There are no examinations with this qualification and it is therefore not possible to fail, candidates are either “competent” or “not yet competent”. Assessment of performance is made by consideration of the results of work-based activities to meet each unit’s assessment criteria.
You will produce a personal portfolio demonstrating understanding and application of skills to meet the assessment criteria. You will present your evidence to your assessor during planned assessment periods. If you select our online option you can submit evidence of the work you have done to meet the criteria through our e-portfolio system. Your assessor will determine the extent to which your evidence confirms completion of the assessment criteria. Feedback is provided and work to meet the criteria can be re-submitted until completion. The administration team monitor your progress to offer support and guidance throughout the qualification.
As an alternative to a paper-based portfolio, our e-portfolio system allows you to provide evidence from anywhere at anytime, 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Using our e-portfolio means secure storage of evidence with no bulky paper-based portfolios to manage, store or send through the post. Our e-portfolio system enables clear and easy communication between you and your assessor.
Depending on your location, it may be necessary to make additional charges to carry out a mandatory (new City & Guilds requirements for this qualification) workplace observation and assessment of evidence.

ASSESSOR AND MENTOR PACKAGES OPTIONS

We provide a face-to-face assessment package at our premises for those candidates that prefer this approach. The package includes an induction workshop and seven one-to-one assessment sessions at our premises over a 12 month period.
Alternatively, the induction, submission and assessment of evidence can be conducted on-line, using our e-portfolio system. You can upload evidence at any time so that it is ready for your seven pre-planned remote assessment sessions. If you choose e-portfolio assessments, you can opt to have your assessments as face-to-face sessions at our premises if you prefer.
In addition to our standard package we offer a premium package which benefits from five one-to-one mentor support sessions over a 12 month period. This provides additional personal guidance on how you can develop and gather evidence of your successful completion of your NVQ activities. Your mentor gets to know you and your organisation and can provide a valuable link to completion of the qualification efficiently.
