English Language and Literature
Level: AS & A Level

Board: Edexcel

Method of Assessment
For both AS and A2 you will sit an exam. You will produce a coursework folder with two written pieces for varied audiences and a critical commentary at AS and a more detailed coursework folder based on reading with further analytical commentary at A2.

Why choose this course?
If you really are interested in both language (how and why we write and speak as we do) and literature (reading very varied literary texts from this and previous centuries) then you will enjoy this opportunity to study language through literature. You will have the chance to be creative and with your own writing and analyse a very wide variety of texts. You will also find it helpful if you are considering Journalism, Media or any other career where communication is important.

What will I study?
At AS you will study how voices are created in text and compare this to real speech, with varied poetry, prose and drama texts which you will compare and analyse. This will lead into your own writing and critical commentaries in your coursework.

In your second year you will develop all these skills of analysis, including your own writing, in coursework; and read more widely from very varied texts written before 1770, for media and personal use, and from all literary genres.

Huish Extra
Visiting authors and examiners give you extra help and tips for success. There are opportunities to go on trips to back up your study of drama and wider texts. You can attend dedicated workshops for extra guidance. We also offer a creative writing workshop with a professional writer and you will have the chance to contribute to the college magazine.
