Course information:
AS Level in English Language

Course summary:
This one year course leads to AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.

Course content:
The course is divided into two parts at AS Level.
Part 1 focuses on

Language Today. You†ll look at how language use can tell us about the identity of a speaker/writer and how we change the way we use language depending on factors such as who we are talking/writing to and what we are talking/writing to them about. You†ll acquire a â€-toolkit†of terminology to use to describe how language creates meaning, and the way that the audience of a text interprets what we say and write. This may include how we â€-misinterpret†what we read and hear.
Part 2,

Exploring the Writing Process, allows you to demonstrate your skill as a writer. You†ll explore techniques used in a variety of genres (types/styles of writing) to help you to produce texts that are typical for specific genres, audiences and purposes. You†ll write a commentary that explains the techniques you†ve used to portray/convey the desired effect. The commentary will not exceed 500 words for each piece. There are two tasks. You†ll produce a journalism interview which portrays your interviewee in a positive or negative light. You will also write a script on a topical issue about the way language is used today.

Course structure:
English Language is very different from GCSE. It is more of a â€-scientific†study of the way language works in different situations. It combines with a wide range of subjects at both AS and A Level, and is a good â€-all round†subject to have for university entry.

Assessment procedure:
There are two units:

1. Language Today. (100 marks) 2hrs 15 minute examination.
Part one will contain short questions based on data supplied to
you. Part 2 requires longer answers based on the same
materials.

2. Exploring the Writing Process. (80 marks). Coursework
between 2000-2500 words in total for both tasks and both
commentaries.

Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level English Language.

Progression opportunities:
Successful students could progress to an A2 Level in English Language.

Free study and financial support:
Most full-time students do not have to pay for their course. We may also be able to help you with some of the extra costs associated with college, eg travel, childcare, equipment, books etc. In addition, if you have just left school, you may be eligible for an Educational Maintenance Allowance. Please ask us about â€-Money Matters†for more details.
