Course programme
Level: AS & A Level
Board: Edexcel
Method of assessment
For both AS & A2 you will sit an exam and produce a coursework portfolio at AS and a further wider-reading coursework folder at A2.
Why choose this course?
You should consider this course if you enjoy reading and analysing varied and wide-ranging literary text and you have lots of views about it; or if you enjoy discussion and argument - both orally and on paper. You will also find it helpful if you are studying other subjects that involve communication and analysis of ideas, or if you have career plans in Media, Arts, Journalism or anything where clear argument and analysis of ideas is important.
What will I study?
In your first year you will look at a wide range of texts for analysis: novels, poetry and Shakespearean drama. You will consider how language is used by different authors and in different social contexts, comparing and contrasting texts. You will also produce your own creative piece in response to text.
In your second year your coursework will be based on four texts in a portfolio of critical and comparative analysis. You will study more poetry and prose for the themed exam, possibly on elements of the Gothic or Pastoral in Literature.
Huish Extra
English Literature students take part in many trips to back up their studies. These have included Shakespeare†s Globe Theatre, Hardy†s Dorset, Oxford for potential English students, local and regional theatre trips and much more! We run Advanced Extension award English and invite senior examiners in to help students with their exam preparation. All study is backed up with detailed handbooks that we create for you, and teaching staff provide workshops to help you to improve your grades.
We have an expert running a creative writing course once a week after college. The college magazine will be produced at regular intervals. You can enter the Brunner Prize, a creative writing competition.
