About this course

Previous study of psychology is not required but full time students will need to have achieved GCSE passes at C or above in English and Mathematics. A Science subject at C or above is preferred.

AS Level in Psychology


Course summary:
This one-year course leads to an AS level, which is a qualification in its own right. It can also be used as the first half (50%) of an A level qualification.

Course content:
Aims of the course are to encourage candidates to:
  • Study psychological theories, research, concepts, studies and methods and apply relevant terminology
  • Develop skills of analysis, interpretation and evaluation
  • Develop an understanding of different areas of Psychology
  • Develop and understanding of ethical issues in psychology, including the ethical implications of psychological research

Syllabus includes

• Psychological Approaches including Behaviourism, Biological, Cognitive and Psychodynamic.
• Treatments and Theories associated with the approaches including stress, aggression, and personality and attribution theory.
• Research Methods, analysing data, designing and implementing psychological research.
• Detailed evaluation of key studies in Psychology.

Assessment procedure:
Two examination papers are offered for assessment in January and June. To gain an Advanced Subsidiary AS award students must take both papers.

Qualifications achieved:
GCE AS Level Psychology WJEC

Progression opportunities:
Successful students could progress to an A2 Level qualification in Psychology.
Psychology combined with other subjects could lead to career paths in the following occupations:
  • Caring professions; nursing, social work, care assistant, medicine
  • Business occupations; trainee management, marketing
  • Education; nursery teaching, teacher and training posts
  • Police force; law; criminal justice system
  • Central and local government, civil service

A degree and higher degree in psychology would lead to a career as a practising psychologist: Educational Psychologist, Occupational Psychologist, Child Psychologist, Forensic Psychologist and Clinical Psychologist.
