Method of assessment
A modular course each assessed by a short examination.

Why choose this course?
This course offers an academic approach to the study of religion, philosophy and ethics. It is designed for students of any religious persuasion or none. This course offers a range of academic responses to the most important questions: how do I live? Is there any meaning or purpose to life? Could there be a life after death? Is it reasonable to believe that there is a God? You will have the opportunity to study religious texts in a scholarly rational way and evaluate the responses given to these questions by religion. You will also study philosophical responses to such claims and evaluate the place of logic in the quest for truth. Acquiring wisdom is not just about learning how to think well, although this is vital, but about learning what it is to live well. This course therefore includes an ethics module where you will not only learn how to think intelligently about practical issues, such as human genetic engineering, but also study a number of scholarly impressions of what it would be to live a good life. It is a broad-based challenging subject designed for those who want to work hard and engage at the highest level.

What will I study?
Religious texts, philosophical analysis and ethical study are the major lines of enquiry. However, religious experiences, such as near death experiences, are reported by 35% of the British public and questions therefore about the nature and validity of such claims underpin much of the course.
