This course provides an appropriate breadth of underpinning knowledge for non-specialists in fire safety to enable them to discharge more effectively their organisational duties or functions with respect to workplace fire safety.  The Fire Certificate is designed for managers, supervisors, employee representatives and others and aims to equip holders to contribute to the conduct and review of fire risk assessments within most workplaces. Course programme

The first part of the syllabus incorporates those elements of the National General Certificate syllabus assessed by paper A1, dealing with health and safety management. Candidates who have already achieved either the National General Certificate or passed paper A1 within the previous five years will not need to retake this paper and that previous achievement will count towards this award.

The main topics covered in the rest of the syllabus are:

  • Managing fire safety
  • Principles of fire and explosion
  • Causes and prevention of fires
  • Fire protection in buildings
  • Safety of people in the event of a fire
  • Fire risk assessment

There is also a practical assessment.


Students are entered for the NEBOSH Certificate examinations in March, June or December.
