The syllabus consists of:-

Unit NGC1 Management of health and safety

• Foundations in health and safety
• Policy
• Organising for health and safety
• Promoting a positive health and safety culture
• Risk assessment
• Principles of control
• Monitoring, review and audit
• Incident and accident investigation, recording and reporting

(Unit NGC1 is common to the National General Certificate and the Construction Certificate. Therefore, students who have either passed the National General Certificate or unit NGC1 within the previous five years will be exempt from completing that unit again).

Unit NCC1 Managing and controlling hazards in construction activities

• Construction law and management
• Construction site - hazards and control
• Vehicle and plant movement hazards and control
• Musculoskeletal hazards and risk control
• Work equipment hazards and control
• Electrical safety
• Fire safety
• Chemical and biological health hazards and risk control
• Physical and psychological health hazards and risk control
• Working at height - hazards and control
• Excavation work, confined spaces and working in cofferdams and caissons - hazards and control
• Demolition - hazards and control

Unit NCC2 - this is the practical aspect aimed to test the candidate's ability to carry out a safety inspection of a construction workplace and to prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take appropriate action.
