Course programme

Drawing from the life model over a four day period, this course will teach you to draw with more confidence, understanding and skill - all achieved through acute observation and understanding of light and form. We will explore different light qualities on the model and you will investigate how light and shadow can really help you to see and explore the volumes in the human figure in a deeper way, allowing the form to lead you to the line.

Topics covered

  • Throughout the week we will cover the basic principles of light theory and shadows, how shadows are formed, how they work and how they define the form.
  • You will gain a better understanding of how contrast and discerning mark making can set the mood in a drawing, as well as gaining solid drawing techniques
  • The course will touch on aspects of perspective and foreshortening and shadow casting. We will start with a series of short poses to 'free up the hand' and learn to draw with economy and speed, building up to longer poses, with the last pose being held over a day for a more considered piece of work.

    • Level: This course is suitable for all levels.

    Entry requirements: No previous life drawing experience is required.

    The course will be particularly useful to students familiar to life drawing wishing to deepen their practice and experiment and learn within a structured framework.

    Anyone interested in learning how to drawing from the model, a unique practice that is incredibly challenging, exciting, intense and hugely rewarding.
