This will be an introduction and investigation into the structure and musculature of the human figure using the life model as reference.

You will use all this information to create your own sculpture in wax using traditional aluminium armature and modelling skills.

About this course

• Have an understanding of the major bones in the skeleton and muscle groups in the human form.
• Name and illustrate how to make preparatory observational drawings and measurements ready for sculpture.
• Gather, prepare, and construct an aluminium armature for a standing pose.
• Use an armature to demonstrate improved wax modelling skills towards finished sculpture.
• Work independently & make aesthetic judgements to develop self-expressed finished sculpture.
• Name 3 artists and/or cultures using wax as a sculptural medium.
• Work safely with the materials, equipment and procedures of the subject.

All basic materials are provided. No extra costs.
You should bring a sketchbook/notebook, pencil and camera.
Stout shoes must be worn in the Sculpture studio.

There will be whole group and small group demonstrations and plenty of 1:1 help. There will be the opportunity for small group evaluations and discussion.

• Basic anatomy of the human form
• How to make observational working drawings and measurements of the life-model including measurements to make a working armature.
• How make and construct an armature for standing pose
• Introduction to wax modelling.
• How to make critical decisions making skills in relation to their own artwork and self-expression, as a member of the group.
• The history of wax sculptures.
• Introduction to the safe use of equipment, materials and procedures and practice in the sculpture studio.

Additional information

The sculpture department offers a programme of courses that will allow you to progress from beginner to advanced as well as learn a range of techniques. For example, we offer a number of courses that concentrate on modelling from the figure: VU790 VU791 and VU792 while the City Lit Sculpture course will help you to build an individual sculpture practice and exhibit your work. You could join specific specialist courses like Carving in Stone (VU805) to further your skills. Please ask your tutor for advice.
