Course programme

The advent of multi-skilling in production dictates that there is a need for a new course specifically designed for those who would benefit from enhancing their lighting awareness and improving their understanding of the fundamentals when charged with the responsibility of assessing and developing basic lighting scenarios for studio and location

Who is it for ?
All vision staff, electricians, riggers, production managers, location managers, studio and trainee camera operators and other multi-skilled production staff requiring a broad base of lighting awareness.
The course is designed to accommodate the changes in working practices throughout ITV and the BBC resulting in more people requiring a working knowledge of basic lighting practices across a broad base of programme making, including a valuable insight into safe working practice and risk assessment

Aims of the course
To help integrate theory and practical skills learnt into a consistent professional working approach with an improved level of picture awareness

Structure of the course
Week one covers the basic background to understanding the fundamentals and parameters of lighting and picture analysis. A wide range of equipment will be available from a variety of manufacturers and will be used in 'hands-on' seminars designed to cover the basic lighting techniques for studio and location including mixed lighting scenarios for day and night. By week two, delegates are working in pairs and threes, carrying out a variety of practical exercises designed to develop their comprehension of lighting, building on skills and theory learnt in the first week. A tutor is always on hand to monitor the work and give guidance, and all exercises are recorded for subsequent review, discussion and analysis at the end of each session. During the course, delegates are encouraged to perform risk assessment and they can log this in their course file.
